I see us really digging into what I calls roots country music. We are at our best when we are playing an older style of country music that has strong grooves with magnetic melodies.
Matt Jones
At the helm of this musical outfit is Matt Jones, whose songwriting draws from personal experiences and the lives of people he’s encountered. Alongside him is lead guitarist and band leader Paul Boll, whose incredible talent ensures that every performance is tight, engaging, and pushes the band to new heights.
Matt Jones’s journey into music is as unique as his sound. After hanging up his baseball cleats, Jones found solace in songwriting during his time in Steamboat Springs, CO. What started as a creative outlet soon blossomed into a full-fledged musical career, guided by the expertise of producer Steve Boynton.
Songbird Jones, a name inspired by Matt’s brother’s college composition, has been making waves in the country music scene with their distinctive “roots country” style. The band’s sound is characterized by strong grooves and magnetic melodies that harken back to an older style of country music while still feeling fresh and relevant.
Audiences at the Texas Music Cafe® can expect an evening filled with upbeat roots country tunes interspersed with contemplative slower numbers. Each song tells a story, offering listeners a glimpse into Jones’s life and the characters he’s met along the way.
The band’s recent tour through East Texas, Memphis, and Nashville has only sharpened their live performance skills. Matt fondly recalls their Memphis show as one of their best to date, while their Nashville gig marked a significant milestone in terms of venue prestige.
In addition to their regular repertoire, Matt Jones has been working on a unique project throughout 2024. He’s been releasing one song per month, each an “heirloom farm and ranch song” commissioned for and about specific farms and ranches across the country. These songs showcase Jones’s storytelling prowess and his ability to capture the essence of rural American life.
One standout track to listen for is “Bonnie Lass,” one of Jones’s earliest and most beloved compositions. The song tells the charming origin story of a girl’s name, inspired by a nurse’s exclamation at her birth – a perfect example of how Jones weaves real-life anecdotes into his music.
